Amakhala Volunteers
Join an unforgettable volunteer experience at Amakhala Private Game Reserve, where your days are filled with meaningful work, community spirit, and a little adventure along the way. Every activity matters and contributes to the preservation of Africa’s wildlife, for many years to come.
Set in a malaria-free area, the working base – Amakhala Private Game Reserve, offers a safe and enriching environment for volunteers. The reserve is home to the Big Five, providing unforgettable wildlife encounters alongside your conservation efforts. Whether you’re learning, contributing, or simply enjoying the camaraderie of life on a game reserve, every day at Amakhala Volunteers is a unique opportunity to make a difference – all while creating memories that last a lifetime.
Amakhala Volunteers
Programme Overview
Start your mornings early, tackling a variety of conservation tasks that make a real impact – from fence and road maintenance, predator monitoring, aquaponics, and bush encroachment management to other hands-on projects that support the reserve’s thriving ecosystem
Volunteers are invited to Vet procedures within the reserve, and often assist with Game capture and predator collaring.
The program also has community involvement, where Volunteers spend time with feeding schemes, pet wellness days and assisting at the local school. The work day usually ends in the late afternoon, where Volunteers return to the house for dinner and relaxation before the next day’s adventure.
No two weeks mirror each other, each week is planned carefully based on the needs for the period – however, one certainty from one week to the next, is the balance of conservation, community and fun!
But volunteering isn’t all work – there’s time to enjoy special outings, connect with fellow volunteers, and explore the surrounding area. Volunteers staying for two weeks or more enjoy an immersive four-star lodge experience, with the option available to one-week volunteers at an extra cost.
Weekends are fun times with planned activities, which could include visits to Addo Elephant National Park, excursions to our golden beaches, Guided bush walks, and river-based activities focused on bird behaviour. Volunteers also visit the Sidbury Club, based within the Amakhala Game Reserve from time to time.

A Typical Day on the Reserve
Volunteers are busy from Monday to Friday, typically working about eight hours a day. The weekends are free, allowing time to relax or go sightseeing.
Volunteers are assigned a qualified guide who serves as their co-ordinator, supported by an assistant and an intern. Open game viewers are assigned for use throughout the program. While daily activities vary, Volunteers usually leave the house at around 7h30 and set out on various working adventures – such as tracking lions using telemetry equipment or monitoring wildlife behaviour.
Days are set out for Community outreach, where Volunteers play a crucial part in feeding schemes and learn to read programs. Fence patrols are a crucial part of keeping the reserve safe, and Volunteers play a big role with assisting with the management of such with their movement throughout the reserve. Days are filled with first hand information about the animals and vegetation that is worked with – which usually translates to wonderful stories over dinner each evening.

Sidbury Primary
Amakhala Foundation recently played a key role in hosting a joyful Sports Day for Sidbury and Lucebiso Primary Schools, bringing together over 50 children from Grades R to 3. Organised by Woodbury Lodge owner Richard Gush and supported by Amakhala staff and volunteers, the event aimed to promote teamwork, confidence, and physical development through a range of fun, inclusive activities—from sprint races to water-bucket relays.
Parents and teachers joined in the day’s energy, cheering from the sidelines and even competing in their own race. A prize-giving ceremony closed the day, recognising top athletes and celebrating every child’s participation. The event was filled with laughter and encouragement, reinforcing the value of play in early learning and community connection.
This initiative reflects the broader mission of the Amakhala Foundation, which supports education and youth development through its bursary programmes and partnerships with local schools. By investing in events like these, the Foundation helps strengthen rural schooling and ensures children can thrive—both in and out of the classroom.
