A Legacy of Land, Heritage & Conservation
Our Amakhala Story
Amakhala Game Reserve traces its roots back to 1999. What began as a visionary conservation partnership between the owners of six lodges has since grown into one of the region’s most inspiring wildlife success stories.
These founding families, direct descendants of the brave Frontier settlers who arrived with the British in 1820, have called the rugged Zuurveld home for over five generations. Where their ancestors once farmed sheep and cattle on this wild and untamed land, a new legacy of restoration and protection has been born.
In 2011, the founding members joined forces with the Lion Roars Group, launching a unified marketing initiative and refreshing the Amakhala brand.
Today, ten exceptional properties stand proudly under the Amakhala Game Reserve banner – a collaboration that strengthens our shared mission and showcases the reserve as a premier wildlife destination in the Eastern Cape.
Covering almost 10 000ha of breathtaking landscapes, Amakhala is more than a safari destination — it is a living conservation project. Here, wildlife is reintroduced to roam freely once again, and the natural balance of flora and fauna is carefully restored. What was once farmland has been lovingly returned to nature, honouring the land’s history while safeguarding its future.
